Denis Akankunda Bwesigye, DrPH

Board Member 

He worked with Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health as a Deputy Director for a health systems strengthening and an emergency medicine program in Ghana and Rwanda. Denis recently earned his DrPH in Health Policy Management from the State University of New York at Albany. His doctoral dissertation was titled “Factors associated with incomplete reporting of HIV and AIDS by Uganda’s surveillance system.” He earned his Master Degree in Population and Reproductive Health Research from Mahidol University, Thailand.

Denis is passionate about work related to HIV/AIDS, maternal newborn and child health, including health systems strengthening, especially focused on low and middle-income countries.

Denis is originally from Uganda, where he worked as a health systems consultant for the World Bank in Kampala. During that time, he coordinated a technical working group and developed a two-year national workplan to improve the country’s health management information systems. He also managed two Centers for Disease Control projects in Nigeria and South Africa related to HIV, maternal and newborn health services.

He has authored and co-authored a number of research publications and written news articles on a variety of health topics with the aim of educating and sensitizing general public on a wide range of health topics and also to impact health policy.
